Public Office (Accountability) Bill
Written evidence submitted by Former Members of the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the Public Office (Accountability) Bill Committee (POAB16)
Dear Committee,
Thank you for allowing Margaret, Charlotte, Steve and I to give evidence on Thursday, please can I add a few words about our financial losses:
Just before the first inquests Trevor Hicks, who was, at that time, the chairman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, had to ask all the families who were members of HFSG to give £3000 to pay for our one barrister to represent all the families and survivors. Sadly, not all of the families were able to afford this, so Trevor then had to go back to the families who had paid and ask for a further £500.
Our one barrister was working against teams of barristers for the police, Sheffield City Council, the FA etc etc who were all funded out of the "public purse". This is why legal aid for families is so important and also why there should be a cap put on the funding for public bodies.
Trusting you will find this a useful addition to our evidence?
