RVAR exemption: Nexus boarding devices

Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, trading as Nexus, has applied for exemption to routinely use boarding devices at wheelchair accessible doors.

The exemption would be valid until 2025 and applicable in situations only when the platform gap is greater than 75mm horizontally and 50mm vertically.

The application is based on current accessibility levels with existing platform gaps, booked assistance using manual boarding ramps will remain available.

An additional exemption request relating to the provision of non-compliant handrails in passenger doorways was made on 12 September 2018 requiring re-opening of the consultation. The additional exemption is that vehicles on the Nexus network have door handrails fitted in at 500mm to 1000mm above floor level whereas standards require a height range of 700mm to 1200mm.
