When the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was established the government issued a non-binding ministerial statement of strategic priorities (the steer) outlining the government’s aims for the CMA.

The steer provides a clear statement of how the government sees competition fitting with its wider objectives for the economy. It sits alongside the CMA’s accountability framework and its legal duties.

This consultation is on the government’s new steer to outline the strategic priorities for the CMA during this parliament. We are seeking views on the general approach and the length of time the steer should be in place for.

The consultation was announced as part of the action plan to boost the UK’s productivity.
