The UK has become used to reliable global energy markets providing a large proportion of its energy needs. Vladimir Putin’s apparent weaponisation of gas supplies has shown that the physical accessibility of energy supplies remains a crucial policy consideration, at least in the short to medium term. The UK Government needs to ensure that citizens and businesses have access to secure and affordable energy while at the same time doing its fair share towards limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C, in line with its common, but differentiated responsibilities as a signatory to the Paris Agreement and the Glasgow Climate Pact.
