The government is reforming energy retail markets to strengthen consumer protections and introduce a social energy tariff for vulnerable households, addressing market concentration and unfair pricing practices. Led by DESNZ and Ofgem under the Energy Act 2023, reforms target both domestic and small business customers who lack adequate protections. The policy is active with legislative bills and market reform consultations in progress.
