CMA Energy market investigation: government response
Government response to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) Energy market investigation.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is reforming retail energy market regulation and consumer redress mechanisms, including proposals to strengthen the Energy Ombudsman's powers, regulate third-party intermediaries, and establish an Energy Debt Relief Scheme. Current issues include billing accuracy, back-billing practices, supplier non-compliance with ombudsman rulings, and exploitative practices in the non-domestic energy market. The government is consulting on permanent consumer protections and debt relief funded by energy company windfall profits.
