Vehicle CO2 Emission Standards

Vehicle CO2 Emission Standards set mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions from new cars, vans, buses, and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to drive decarbonization of the transport sector. Led by the Department for Transport, the policy is active with recent focus on updating minimum emission standards for new road vehicles and establishing a new HGV CO2 regulatory framework. Current work includes consultation on zero-emission bus requirements and environmental charging mechanisms, aligned with the Seventh Carbon Budget and net-zero 2050 targets.
