The Cabinet Office and DSIT are implementing a government-wide digital transformation strategy to build digital capability across the civil service, with targets including 10% of civil servants having digital expertise by 2026 and all departments appointing digital non-executive directors. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on external digital consultants (saving up to £500 million annually) and improve digital procurement and legacy technology management, though current progress shows only 5.5% of civil servants meet the expertise target as of April 2025.
